Cultural and Performing Arts Accomplishments

Dr. Henry Luttikhuizen, a distinguished scholar and luminary in the world of art history, graduated from Hudsonville High School in 1982. Although his early years hinted at greatness, little did anyone know that Henry would become a renowned figure in Dutch art. 

Dr. Luttikhuizen earned his Ph.D. at the University of Virginia, where he honed his expertise in Dutch art from the years 1400 to 1700. His academic journey was marked by an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and a passion for art history. 

For nearly three decades, Dr. Luttikhuizen shared his wisdom and expertise with students as a dedicated professor of Art History at Calvin University. Dr. Luttikhuizen's path led him to Grand Valley State University, where he currently serves as a Scholar in Residence for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. During his esteemed career, he has co-authored numerous essays and textbooks, contributing significantly to the scholarly discourse in his field. 

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Luttikhuizen emerged as a leader in the arts and academic communities. He has served as the President of the Midwest Art History Society, a testament to his standing in the field. In addition, he assumed the role of President of the American Association of Netherlandic Studies, highlighting his commitment to promoting and preserving Dutch cultural heritage. 

Henry Luttikhuizen's impact extends into the world of curation. He has curated numerous exhibitions, including the acclaimed "Everything Beautiful in Its Time: Six Centuries of Prints from the Jansma Collection" at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. His curatorship showcased his keen eye for artistic excellence and historical significance, captivating audiences and enriching the cultural landscape of his community. 

While his arts and academic achievements are unparalleled, Dr. Luttikhuizen is not defined solely by his cultural and scholarly pursuits. During the summer, he finds solace and joy on golf courses and local rivers, appreciating the natural beauty of his surroundings. Despite his affinity for water, he embraces a different form—frozen. Twice a week, he dons his ice skates and engages in the exhilarating sport of hockey.
